Team Freedom

Hundreds of foreign volunteers travelled to northern Syria to join the Kurdish YPG in the fight against ISIS, and some of them formed their own units. In the spring of 2015 I followed two of these groups for several weeks: from a training camp far behind the lines, where new arrivals learned the basics of soldiering, to the front itself, where they lived and fought alongside local forces.
