Kobane's Aftermath

Kobane, Syria & Suruç, Turkey, 2015

Kobane and Suruç sit on either side of the Turkish–Syrian border, towns bound together by family and history. When ISIS besieged Kobane in the autumn of 2014, thousands crossed into Suruç, while others gathered along the frontier to watch the battle, often watching their relatives’ homes, and their own, being destroyed. After months of street fighting, backed by US airstrikes and Peshmerga reinforcements who crossed through Turkey, Kurdish fighters drove ISIS out in January 2015. These photographs show the city after the battle, alongside the celebrations and gatherings on the Turkish side of the border.
