Urban Warfare

Turkey, 2015–2016

After peace talks between the Turkish state and the PKK collapsed in 2015, the conflict moved into the cities of Turkey’s southeast. Militants dug trenches and built barricades in old neighbourhoods; the state answered with round-the-clock curfews and military operations that went on for months. Whole districts were emptied, tens of thousands of residents displaced, and parts of historic city centres reduced to rubble. These photographs come from that period, when the war reached people’s front doors.
