Survivors of Hagupit

Eastern Samar, Philippines, 2015

Around twenty typhoons enter Philippine waters every year, and the people of Eastern Samar, one of the country’s poorest provinces, have learned to live with them. A year after Typhoon Haiyan devastated the region, Typhoon Hagupit made landfall there in December 2014. It was a powerful storm, but the Philippines has seen far worse, and mass evacuations kept the death toll low. Still, for families who had only just rebuilt, it meant losing homes, boats and crops once again. In January 2015 I photographed survivors in the affected villages: portraits of people starting over, again.
